INDIA TODAY'S TOP MEDICAL COLLEGES

COVER STORY: INDIA TODAY-AC NIELSEN-ORG-MARG SURVEY OF COLLEGES

MedicineAIIMS retains its top position, while Lady Hardinge powers its way into the Top 10.
By Shruti Maheshwari

FOCUSED: Students at AIIMS learn better as it attracts special cases With a whopping 75,000 applications for just 45 MBBS seats, the probability of getting into the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) barely beats zero. For somebody like final-year student Ashish Kataria, who is now posted as an intern and will soon become a full-fledged physician, getting into AIIMS meant not just fulfilment of all his days of hard work, but another half decade of the same. But then, no one is complaining.
As a consecutive topper for four years in the survey, AIIMS has practically beaten all competition. Up from sixth position last year is the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, which has taken the No. 2 slot from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, which in turn is down to third place this year.
AIIMS director Dr P. Venugopal believes that the institute's "trinity of mission-education, research and patient-care-coupled with selfless and dedicated service" has made it what it is today. Its unique brand of autonomy enables it to design its own curriculum, a privilege that no other medical college in the country enjoys. Add to it a faculty of 500 teachers and you know why AIIMS produces some of the finest doctors in the country..
TOP 10
1 AIIMS, Delhi
2 CMC, Vellore
3 AFMC, Pune
4 JIPMER, Pondicherry
5 Lady Hardinge, Delhi
6 Kasturba Med. College, Chennai

ENGINEERINGDelhi leads the IIT bandwagon again as four new colleges figure among the crème de la crème
By Shruti Maheshwari

PICTURE SPEAK
HEADING THE QUEUE: IIT, Delhi students Excellence, they say, doesn't come easy. You have to work hard at it. Professor Surendra Prasad, director, IIT Delhi, is unflinching when he speaks of the value additions that take place within the ramparts of this 320-acre citadel of excellence. "Just getting a bunch of good students doesn't mean a thing unless you ensure that excellence is not only sustained but also nurtured," says the institute director.
Not surprisingly, IIT Delhi manages to reassert its pre-eminent position time and again. It has emerged as the topper in the engineering stream for the second time in a row. And as always, the IITs have managed to corner most of the ranks this year too, with IIT Kanpur-up from No. 4 last year-nudging IIT Mumbai from second to third.
Staying ahead is not easy. When it comes to comparing the IITs with other engineering institutes, it is the system of open electives that enables them to maintain their lead. Almost half of the 180 credits students have to complete are not specific to any discipline. So if you are a student of biochemical engineering, you could find yourself studying the philosophy of language and even algorithms along with DNA technology. This enables them to get dual specialisation in any field of their choice, a feature that can work wonders in the age of multi-specialisation and multi-tasking. Take Mekala Krishnan, a final-year mechanical engineering student at IIT Delhi, who has got a lucrative job offer for a business analyst's post from the consultancy firm McKinsey & Co, even as she is toying with the idea of doing a Master's in fluid mechanics at Cornell University, US.

It's been an impressive performance by the Delhi College of Engineering

It's been an impressive performance by the Delhi College of Engineering, up six places. There were 60 companies at the campus this year. UK-based Laing O'Rourke, a non-IT company in the construction space, made the highest offer of Rs 9 lakh per annum.
Offers recorded an increase with the average rising to Rs 5.4 lakh per annum. In fact, DCE maintains its performance on placements this year as well with some of the biggest names in the IT industry making a beeline to its campus. DCE also needs to get into higher number of collaborations with different government and non-government bodies to improve its association with the industry.

dataquest ranking of T-SCHOOLS

It's T-school rating time again as we come back with our second DataquestIDC T-School Survey. Every survey primarily comprises two factors-the overall research findings and the methodology-and it is our methodology that differentiates us from other surveys.
At this stage it is important to clarify the definition of a T-school. The term could be ambiguous; especially as the general connotation, in all likelihood, would be that of a regular engineering institute. While a regular institute may be very strong on several parameters, Dataquest's key consideration is the strength of the institute from the IT industry point of view. We have prioritized the parameters that matter to the IT recruiters of the country. Therefore, while an institute may get the maximum number of recruiters visiting during campus placements, the proportion of IT employers could be low, thereby negatively affecting its performance in our survey. The same would hold true for all other parameters and sub-parameters.
Last year saw the first comprehensive T-School study from Dataquest, in association with IDC. As every popular survey is followed by reactions-some positive, some not so, and some moderate, so was ours. We thank all our readers for the bouquets and also the brick-bats, which helped in our efforts to constantly improve the survey and add more value, towards which we have made certain changes in the format over last year. We wanted to do it in a structured manner in discussion with the two major stakeholders in the study ie, the institutes and the IT recruiters.
We conducted separate focus group discussions to hear their suggestions and then identify the contours of the study. The objective was to take into account parameters that are more relevant and could be validated. So, factors that were not relevant or could not be validated were not considered (or given lower weightage) in the survey.

The PerformersThe IITs continue to rule, with some shuffle at the top. IIT-Madras replaces IIT-Kanpur as the numero uno this year, and the latter slipped to number six. In fact, both the Delhi and Kharagpur IITs have beaten Bombay and Kanpur in the game this year. Even IIT-Guwahati puts up a great performance and moves up four places to take the fourth rank.
