INDIA TODAY'S TOP MEDICAL COLLEGES

COVER STORY: INDIA TODAY-AC NIELSEN-ORG-MARG SURVEY OF COLLEGES

MedicineAIIMS retains its top position, while Lady Hardinge powers its way into the Top 10.
By Shruti Maheshwari

FOCUSED: Students at AIIMS learn better as it attracts special cases With a whopping 75,000 applications for just 45 MBBS seats, the probability of getting into the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) barely beats zero. For somebody like final-year student Ashish Kataria, who is now posted as an intern and will soon become a full-fledged physician, getting into AIIMS meant not just fulfilment of all his days of hard work, but another half decade of the same. But then, no one is complaining.
As a consecutive topper for four years in the survey, AIIMS has practically beaten all competition. Up from sixth position last year is the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, which has taken the No. 2 slot from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, which in turn is down to third place this year.
AIIMS director Dr P. Venugopal believes that the institute's "trinity of mission-education, research and patient-care-coupled with selfless and dedicated service" has made it what it is today. Its unique brand of autonomy enables it to design its own curriculum, a privilege that no other medical college in the country enjoys. Add to it a faculty of 500 teachers and you know why AIIMS produces some of the finest doctors in the country..
TOP 10
1 AIIMS, Delhi
2 CMC, Vellore
3 AFMC, Pune
4 JIPMER, Pondicherry

9 St. John's, Bangalore
10 BMC, Bangalore

ENGINEERINGDelhi leads the IIT bandwagon again as four new colleges figure among the crème de la crème
By Shruti Maheshwari

PICTURE SPEAK
HEADING THE QUEUE: IIT, Delhi students Excellence, they say, doesn't come easy. You have to work hard at it. Professor Surendra Prasad, director, IIT Delhi, is unflinching when he speaks of the value additions that take place within the ramparts of this 320-acre citadel of excellence. "Just getting a bunch of good students doesn't mean a thing unless you ensure that excellence is not only sustained but also nurtured," says the institute director.
Not surprisingly, IIT Delhi manages to reassert its pre-eminent position time and again. It has emerged as the topper in the engineering stream for the second time in a row. And as always, the IITs have managed to corner most of the ranks this year too, with IIT Kanpur-up from No. 4 last year-nudging IIT Mumbai from second to third.
Staying ahead is not easy. When it comes to comparing the IITs with other engineering institutes, it is the system of open electives that enables them to maintain their lead. Almost half of the 180 credits students have to complete are not specific to any discipline. So if you are a student of biochemical engineering, you could find yourself studying the philosophy of language and even algorithms along with DNA technology. This enables them to get dual specialisation in any field of their choice, a feature that can work wonders in the age of multi-specialisation and multi-tasking. Take Mekala Krishnan, a final-year mechanical engineering student at IIT Delhi, who has got a lucrative job offer for a business analyst's post from the consultancy firm McKinsey & Co, even as she is toying with the idea of doing a Master's in fluid mechanics at Cornell University, US.
TOP 10

4 IIT, Kharagpur
5 IIT, Chennai
6 IIT, Roorkee

It's been an impressive performance by the Delhi College of Engineering

It's been an impressive performance by the Delhi College of Engineering, up six places. There were 60 companies at the campus this year. UK-based Laing O'Rourke, a non-IT company in the construction space, made the highest offer of Rs 9 lakh per annum.
Offers recorded an increase with the average rising to Rs 5.4 lakh per annum. In fact, DCE maintains its performance on placements this year as well with some of the biggest names in the IT industry making a beeline to its campus. DCE also needs to get into higher number of collaborations with different government and non-government bodies to improve its association with the industry.

dataquest ranking of T-SCHOOLS

It's T-school rating time again as we come back with our second DataquestIDC T-School Survey. Every survey primarily comprises two factors-the overall research findings and the methodology-and it is our methodology that differentiates us from other surveys.
At this stage it is important to clarify the definition of a T-school. The term could be ambiguous; especially as the general connotation, in all likelihood, would be that of a regular engineering institute. While a regular institute may be very strong on several parameters, Dataquest's key consideration is the strength of the institute from the IT industry point of view. We have prioritized the parameters that matter to the IT recruiters of the country. Therefore, while an institute may get the maximum number of recruiters visiting during campus placements, the proportion of IT employers could be low, thereby negatively affecting its performance in our survey. The same would hold true for all other parameters and sub-parameters.
Last year saw the first comprehensive T-School study from Dataquest, in association with IDC. As every popular survey is followed by reactions-some positive, some not so, and some moderate, so was ours. We thank all our readers for the bouquets and also the brick-bats, which helped in our efforts to constantly improve the survey and add more value, towards which we have made certain changes in the format over last year. We wanted to do it in a structured manner in discussion with the two major stakeholders in the study ie, the institutes and the IT recruiters.
We conducted separate focus group discussions to hear their suggestions and then identify the contours of the study. The objective was to take into account parameters that are more relevant and could be validated. So, factors that were not relevant or could not be validated were not considered (or given lower weightage) in the survey.

The PerformersThe IITs continue to rule, with some shuffle at the top. IIT-Madras replaces IIT-Kanpur as the numero uno this year, and the latter slipped to number six. In fact, both the Delhi and Kharagpur IITs have beaten Bombay and Kanpur in the game this year. Even IIT-Guwahati puts up a great performance and moves up four places to take the fourth rank.

Believers celebrate 25 years since Rendlesham

During the nights of 26 and 27 December 1980, US servicemen at RAF Woodbridge and Bentwaters reported mysterious lights in Rendlesham Forest. The strange lights included a glowing metallic triangle and a hovering object with red and blue lights. UFO enthusiasts are hoping there might be more sightings during the night. Brenda Butler, a local resident who has written about the events of 1980, believes the sightings of 25 years ago were real. "People who were coming up the Butley Road and who... (Read more..)

EXTRAORDINARY HORROR

Whitley Strieber: Twenty years ago tonight, at approximately three thirty in the morning on December 26, 1985, I heard odd noises and felt as if I had fallen out of bed. I opened my eyes to a scene of such extraordinary horror that I am still suffering from the effects of that moment, two decades later. What I saw before me was a small room like the interior of a tent, populated by enormous insects. These insects were at once strange, distant-seeming creatures, totally unlike me and not communic... Teleportation: A practical use

If she could have it her way, Christel Ann Fitero would be transporting people to different places in a snap—literally. For this Electronics and Communications Engineering sophomore, teleportation may soon be more than just a figment of our collective imagination. “[Teleportation] will deliver people to different places [in] an instant,” Christel’s eyes sparkle and her lips curl into an almost naughty grin as she imagines the possibilities. “It will definitely [lessen] the traffic jams we have ... Retired colonel recalls Roswell

Say the name ''Roswell'' and some people immediately think of gray-skinned space aliens with oval-shaped heads and shadowy government agents in black suits. Walter Klinikowski, a Catasauqua native and retired Air Force colonel, is not one of those people. Klinikowski was stationed at the New Mexico Air Force base in summer 1947 when the military recovered a flying disc in the desert. Many people believe they found — and have subsequently covered up — an alien spacecraft. Klinikow... (Read more..)

ROBOTS

What’s the limit for robots? No one knows. They're exploring the deep sea and distant planets. They're saving lives in the operating room and on the battlefield. They're transforming factory floors and filmmaking. Robonaut: Not all NASA robots drive around poking at rocks. This android will one day work alongside people on space stations. Robonaut is the same size and shape as a person in a space suit, so it can handle tasks typically performed by humans - its hands are even better articulated than an astronaut's gloved d... SOLAR SYSTEM

Man will take a bold step towards the final frontier of the Solar System with the expected launch of the first mission to Pluto and beyond next month. The piano-sized New Horizons probe will travel faster than any previous spacecraft on its journey to the planet farthest from the Sun, its moon Charon and the mysterious, icy Kuiper Belt.Relatively little is known about the ninth planet and scientists expect the £290 million Nasa mission to provide important clues to the origins of the Solar Syste... What defines a 'planet' ?

The familiar solar system that you learned about in school — nine well-behaved planets, from Mercury to Pluto, circling sedately in tidy paths around the sun — isn't what it used to be. Astronomers recently have discovered a flock of at least eight other planet-like objects in sometimes wildly eccentric orbits. Four new "ice dwarfs," plus two more probable moons around Pluto, were announced in the last six months. The latest mini-world, temporarily nicknamed "Buffy" and mo... (Read more..)

THE UNANSWERED MYSTERIES

Erich von Däniken first presented more than forty years ago his theory of extraterrestrial contact with the ancient world. Erich von Däniken is the best-selling non-fiction author of all time. His 29 books have sold more than 63 million copies and have been translated into 32 languages. Besides creating a whirlwind of conspiracy, his work has had a far-reaching influence on entertainment and science.

Numerous scientists and interested individuals have joined Erich von Däniken’s research organization (Archaeology, Astronautics & SETI Research Association) which explores new frontiers in the newly established Paläo-SETI science. Erich von Däniken’s latest pictorial book Mysteries is available now. Mysteries will take you on an unforgettable journey around our planet and documents breathtaking photographs of facts and archeological sites supporting Erich von Däniken’s theory of historical contacts between civilizations from outer space with ancient civilizations.

TERRORISM

When will the terrorism end? I think no one can tell that. But can anyone define that what terrorism is? There is no exact definition but what I have heard through news channels is that the terrorist say that they are fighting against the injustice that their community has gone through. But I want to ask from them that is what they did on 7/7, 9/11 is justified. Why always the innocent people suffer from the terrorist attack? Why? Do they have the answer? I am sure that they don’t.
Today, there was an attack on INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE, BANGALORE
What initial reports suggest is that it was an terrorist attack. And definitely no one can justify this. What the brightest minds in the world have done. Why they targeted them? One of the professor of WORLD RENOWNED IIT DELHI died in the attack and few others were injured.

1.3 MILLION BILLION PEOPLE.

Can anyone guess what the maximum number of people that can live on Earth? The answer to this question is YES.
The world’s population is expected to rise from 6.5 billion today to around nine billion in 2050, but according to Viorel Badescu at the polytechnic university of Bucharest in Romania that is nowhere near the limit of the planets capacity.
BADESCU’S calculations, which appear in the International Journal of the Global Energy Issues, next month, are based on the earlier work by the British Physicist John Fremlin. In 1964 Professor Fremlin suggested that the earth would be habitable as long as the amount of heat of heat it received, from activity on the surface and incoming sunlight, equaled the heat it gave out. Too many people and the planet would get too hot to handle. On that basis, Fremlin concluded that the largest population the earth could comfortably was 60 MILLION BILLION PEOPLE.

Badescu and Richard Cathcart a geographical consultant in California repeated Fremlin’s calculations, using more up to date thermodynamic models. Assuming that every person emits 120 watts of heat and it would be uncomfortable if the average temperature at the earth’s surface rose too much, the researchers declared the earth could sustain 1.3 million billion people.

TSUNAMI: THE WAVES OF DISASTER

WHY such unstoppable waves originated? Many will say and believe that was because of the earth quakes that struck. But there were hundreds of earthquakes on earth but how many of them resulted in TSUNAMI THE UNSTOPPABLE WAVE. According to Hindustan times at least 216,858 people were killed, one dozen countries were hit, and the Indonesian province of Aceh suffered the most.

One thing that came out of this is that the mankind can fight with any disaster that comes in their way, even if the battle is one sided. Till date more than 75% of the 13.6 billion in donor pledges has been received.

DISASTER STRIKES WITHOUT ALARM

Katrina, Wilma, Rita all have shown that disaster can strike anywhere in the world. It does take care into account whether the country is developing or developed. It can even fail the disaster management teams of the world.
After the TSUNAMI many said that the loss was massive, also because tsunami striked the developing countries. But the Katrina, Wilma and Rita have shown that natural can fail the disaster management teams of the developed countries and the strongest economy in the world.

SC/ST QUOTA IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION

On one side the government says that they are against the differentiation on the basis of caste, color and creed and on the other side they give reservation to the SC/ST. THEY are differentiating between the general and the SC/ST, THEN after they complete their education then they also have quota in the GOVERNMENT JOBS .IS this not differentiation on the basis of the caste?.
The government should give reservation to the poor people, the orphans rather than giving reservation on the basis of the caste.

MEN AND WOMEN

Who’s better in between them? No one can answer that there are examples where men proved themselves better than women and there are examples as well where women has proved that they are better than men. So what do you have to say?

According to me there are more number of cases where men have proved themselves better than women, so they are better. I want to tell you all one more thing that in DTC buses In Delhi there are seats fixed for women. On one side people or Politian’s say that men and women are equal and on the other side they are making women weaker. Instead of seats reserved for women they should reserve it for old age people, people with disabilities without considering them as men or women. I am not saying that DTC buses does have reserved seats for these people but they are small in number as compared to the seats reserved for the women.

SAURAV GANGULY

WHY Saurav was not in the team? This is the question that many people were asking from the selectors. A man who led the Indian team to the semi-finals in the last world cup is struggling for his selection in the team in the next world cup. Many people will not believe that around the world, but it has happened in India. A player who has 15000+ runs to his credit at the international level, who has been the one of the most successful captions India has seen. This is right that he was not performing up to the level but He must be treated with more respect.

I F selectors are selecting the team on the basis of performance than from my point of view they must first select the best eleven than select the captain from that eleven .They should specify the minimum average the batsmen should have in the fixed number of matches to be in the team, if someone fails to do that take another batsman from reserve. Same should be done for the bowlers. As in today’s situation fielding is very important as well so they can start a point system. Where equal importance is given to all the three aspects of the game, then the minimum points should be specified. THE player who does have the specified points should not be in the final eleven and the player from the reserve is selected. The points to the reserve player should be given on the basis of their performance at the domestic level.
